The study investigated BRCA1/2 prevalence and impact using exome sequencing and electronic health record (EHR) data from 30,223 adult participants of the BioMe Biobank in New York City. There were 218 (0.7%) individuals harboring expected pathogenic variants, resulting in an overall prevalence of 1 in 139.

A genome-wide association study of host resistance to severe Plasmodium falciparum malaria in over 17,000 individuals from 11 malaria-endemic countries shows a newly implicated variant on chromosome 6 associated with risk of cerebral malaria, and the discovery of an erythroid-specific transcription start site.

Digital health literacy is an extension of health literacy and uses the same operational definition. Technology solutions have the potential to promote health literacy. Technology solutions should go beyond building literacy and numeracy skills to functional and critical skills, such as navigating the healthcare system, communication and shared decision making.
