Mystery deepens over animal source of coronavirus- Pangolins are a prime suspect, but a slew of genetic analyses has yet to find conclusive proof.
D Cyranoski, Nature News, February 26, 2020

Scientists have suggested,on the basis of genetic analyses, that the scaly, ant-eating pangolin was the prime suspect. But scientists have now examined those data — along with three other pangolin coronavirus genome studies released last week — and say that although the animal is still a contender, the mystery is far from solved.

Common Human Coronaviruses
CDC, 2020

Common human coronaviruses, including types 229E, NL63, OC43, and HKU1, usually cause mild to moderate upper-respiratory tract illnesses, like the common cold. Most people get infected with one or more of these viruses at some point in their lives. This should not be confused with coronavirus disease 2019 (formerly referred to as 2019 Novel Coronavirus).

Using the electronic health record for genomics research.

Clinical applications of polygenic breast cancer risk: a critical review and perspectives of an emerging field.
Yanes Tatiane et al. Breast cancer research : BCR 2020 Feb 22(1) 21

This article reviews the evidence for polygenic breast cancer risk, including the discovery of variants associated with breast cancer and the use of polygenic risk scores to estimate breast cancer risk. We also review the different applications including testing of women from high-risk breast cancer families with uninformative genetic testing results,

Current controversies in prenatal diagnosis 2: The 59 genes ACMG recommends reporting as secondary findings when sequencing postnatally should be reported when detected on fetal (and parental) sequencing.
Amor David J et al. Prenatal diagnosis 2020 Feb

Genome sequencing is increasingly being used to aid genetic diagnosis in fetuses with structural abnormalities detected on ultrasound examination. However, with clinical exome and genome sequencing, there is potential for the recognition and reporting of incidental or secondary findings unrelated to the indication for ordering the sequencing.

Screening for chronic conditions with reproductive factors using a machine learning based approach.
Tian Siyu et al. Scientific reports 2020 Feb 10(1) 2848

Comparing an artificial neural network to logistic regression for predicting ED visit risk among patients with cancer: a population-based cohort study.
Sutradhar Rinku et al. Journal of pain and symptom management 2020 Feb

Although both models were similar in predictive performance using our data, artificial neural networks have an important role in prediction due to their flexible structure and data-driven distribution-free benefits, and should thus be considered as a potential modeling approach when developing a prediction tool.

Brief introduction of medical database and data mining technology in big data era.
Yang Jin et al. Journal of evidence-based medicine 2020 Feb

Data mining technology can search for potentially valuable knowledge from a large amount of data, mainly divided into data preparation and data mining, and expression and analysis of results. It is a mature information processing technology and applies database technology. Database technology is a software science that researches manages, and applies databases.

Making Informed CHOICES: The Launch of a "Big Data" Pragmatic Trial to Improve Cholesterol Management and Prevent Heart Disease in Ontario.
Ferreira-Legere Laura E et al. Healthcare quarterly (Toronto, Ont.) 2020 Jan 22(4) 6-9

The study is a pragmatic, registry-based, cluster randomized controlled trial that aims to improve cholesterol management through appropriate statin use in adults and to ultimately reduce cardiovascular events in high-risk communities. It uses an innovative, multicomponent intervention approach that includes audit and feedback reports and educational materials.
