Why don’t some coronavirus patients sense their alarmingly low oxygen levels?
JC Frankel, Science, April 28, 2020

Population flow drives spatio-temporal distribution of COVID-19 in China
JS Jia et al, Nature, April 29, 2020

We use mobile-phone-data-based counts of 11,478,484 people in Wuhan as they moved throughout China. We document the efficacy of quarantine in ceasing movement. We show that the distribution of population outflow from Wuhan accurately predicts the relative frequency and geographic distribution of COVID-19 infections.

An ultraportable and versatile point-of-care DNA testing platform
H XU et al, Science Advances, April 28, 2020

Point-of-care testing (POCT) has broad applications in resource-limited settings. Here, a POCT platform termed POCKET (point-of-care kit for the entire test) is demonstrated that is ultraportable and versatile for analyzing multiple types of DNA in different fields in a sample-to-answer manner.

Familial hypercholesterolemia: is it time to separate monogenic from polygenic familial hypercholesterolemia?
Brandts Julia et al. Current opinion in lipidology 2020 Apr

Through genetic testing, a mutation is found in 60-80% of cases with a clinical diagnosis of definite familial hypercholesterolemia. As individuals with a polygenic basis do not follow the same inheritance pattern observed in monogenic familial hypercholesterolemia, cascade screening in individuals with a polygenic origin is not recommended.

Polygenic Scores to Assess Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease Risk: Clinical Perspectives and Basic Implications.
Aragam Krishna G et al. Circulation research 2020 Apr 126(9) 1159-1177

In this review, we describe how genomic analyses of coronary artery disease have been leveraged to create polygenic risk scores. We then discuss evaluations of the clinical utility of these scores, pertinent mechanistic insights gleaned, and practical considerations relevant to the implementation of polygenic risk scores in the health care setting.

The care of patients with Duchenne, Becker and other muscular dystrophies in the COVID-19 pandemic.
Veerapandiyan Aravindhan et al. Muscle & nerve 2020 Apr

The paper discusses consensus recommendations pertaining to care of these patients during the pandemic. We address issues surrounding corticosteroid and exon skipping treatments, cardiac medications, hydroxychloroquine use, emergency/respiratory care, rehabilitation management, and the conduct of clinical trials
