A mathematical model reveals the influence of population heterogeneity on herd immunity to SARS-CoV-2
T Britton et al, Science, June 23, 2020

Despite various levels of preventive measures, in 2020 many countries have suffered severely from the coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. We show that population heterogeneity can significantly impact disease-induced immunity as the proportion infected in groups with the highest contact rates is greater than in groups with low contact rates.

Transcriptomic profiling of disease severity in patients with COVID-19 reveals role of blood clotting and vasculature related genes
KI Masood et al, MEDRXIV, June 22, 2020

Genetic diversity among SARS-CoV2 strains in South America may impact performance of Molecular detection
JD Ramirez et al, MEDRXIV, June 22, 2020

Polymorphisms in the ACE2 Locus Associate with Severity of COVID-19 Infection
L Wooster et al, MEDRXIV, June 22, 2020

Are men who smoke at higher risk for a more severe case of COVID-19 than women who smoke? A Systematic Review
A Rodgers et al, MEDRXIV, June 22, 2020

Effect of Dexamethasone in Hospitalized Patients with COVID-19: Preliminary Report
P Horby et al, MEDRXIV, June 22, 2020

Tau molecular diversity contributes to clinical heterogeneity in Alzheimer’s disease
S Dujardin et al, Nature Medicine, June 22, 2020

Association Between Common Variants in RBFOX1, an RNA-Binding Protein, and Brain Amyloidosis in Early and Preclinical Alzheimer Disease
NS Raghavan et al, JAMA Neurology, June 22, 2020

A meta-analysis of amyloid positron emission tomographic imaging data collected on 4314 participants in 6 studies noted genome-wide significant associations with single-nucleotide variants in a novel locus, RBFOX1, as well as in APOE. In addition, reduced expression of RBFOX1 appeared to be associated with increased amyloid burden and global cognitive decline.

Delivering genome sequencing for rapid genetic diagnosis in critically ill children: parent and professional views, experiences and challenges
M Hill et al, EJHG, June 19, 2020

We found that participants held largely positive views about rapid genome sequencing, describing clinical and emotional benefits from the opportunity to obtain a rapid diagnosis. Parental stress surrounding their child’s illness complicates decision making. Parental concerns are heightened when offered RGS and while waiting for results.

Genetic testing and results disclosure in diverse populations: what does it take?
CR Horowitz, Genetics in Medicine, June 22, 2020

Answering this question requires recognizing and addressing (not just measuring) social determinants leading to unjust racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic health disparities. It also requires attending to research issues such as the need for pilot testing, community engagement, relationship building, research team diversity, flexibility & addressing implicit bias.

Genetics and pediatric hospital admissions, 1985 to 2017
S Giorgoski et al, Genetics in Medicine, June 22, 2020

Two weeks of hospital admissions were classified according to a pre-existing categorization, based on genetic etiology, encompassing chromosomal and monogenic conditions, multifactorial (MF) conditions, and no known genetic cause. We found that conditions with a genetic contribution account for over half of pediatric inpatients.
