As the outbreak of a deadly new coronavirus in China and its rapid spread is rattling countries, only the collective international experience and advances derived from past outbreaks can accelerate its control.

A new coronavirus associated with human respiratory disease in China

Epidemiological investigation suggested that the outbreak was associated with a seafood market. Metagenomic RNA sequencing of a bronchoalveolar lavage fluid sample identified a novel RNA virus from the family Coronaviridae. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that the virus was most closely related to a group of SARS-like coronaviruses from bats in China.
