Towards Personalized Treatment in Hemophilia: The Role of Genetic Factors in Iron and Heme Control to Identify Patients at Risk for Haemophilic Arthropathy
LFD van Vulpen et al, JPM, January 26, 2024

From the abstract: "The treatment landscape for hemophilia is changing rapidly, creating opportunities for personalized treatment. As major morbidity is still caused by hemophilic arthropathy, understanding the factors affecting joint damage and joint damage progression might lead to more individualized treatment regimens. We investigated the association of HFE mutations or HMOX1 polymorphisms affecting iron/heme handling with radiographic joint damage in 252 hemophilia patients (severe and moderate). "

Transparency of artificial intelligence/machine learning-enabled medical devices.
Aubrey A Shick et al. NPJ Digit Med 2024 1 (1) 21

From the article: " The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is reviewing an increasing number of applications for AI/ML devices, with the number receiving FDA marketing authorization nearing seven hundred as of October 2023. AI/ML devices have unique considerations during their development and use, including those for usability, equity of access, management of performance bias, the potential for continuous learning, and stakeholder (manufacturer, patient, caregiver, healthcare provider, etc.) accountability. These considerations impact not only the responsible development and use of AI/ML devices but also the regulation of such devices"

Prospective observational study on biomarkers of response in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma
L Jiang et al, Nature Medicine, January 29, 2024

From the abstract: "Adjuvant chemotherapy benefits patients with resected pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), but the compromised physical state of post-operative patients can hinder compliance. Biomarkers that identify candidates for prompt adjuvant therapy are needed. In this prospective observational study, 1,171 patients with PDAC who underwent pancreatectomy were enrolled and extensively followed-up. Proteomic profiling of 191 patient samples unveiled clinically relevant functional protein modules. A proteomics-level prognostic risk model was established for PDAC, with its utility further validated using a publicly available external cohort. "

Advancing Data Science Among the Federal Public Health Workforce: The Data Science Upskilling Program, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Mary Catherine P Bertulfo et al. J Public Health Manag Pract 2024 1 (2) E41-E46

From the abstract: " The Data Science Upskilling (DSU) program increases data science literacy among staff and fellows working and training at CDC. The DSU program was established in 2019 as a team-based, project-driven, on-the-job applied upskilling program. Learners, within interdisciplinary teams, use curated learning resources to advance their CDC projects. The program has rapidly expanded from upskilling 13 teams of 31 learners during 2019-2020 to upskilling 36 teams of 143 learners during 2022-2023."
