COVID-19 Trends Among School-Aged Children — United States, March 1–September 19, 2020
RT Leeb et al, CDC MMWR, September 28, 2020

Since March, 277,285 COVID-19 cases in children have been reported. COVID-19 incidence among adolescents aged 12–17 years was approximately twice that in children aged 5–11 years. Underlying conditions were more common among school-aged children with severe outcomes related to COVID-19. Data varied over time and by region of the United States.

Genetic variants mimicking therapeutic inhibition of IL-6 receptor signaling and risk of COVID-19
J Bovijn et al, Lancet Rheumatology, September 25, 2020

Our findings show that IL6R variants mimicking therapeutic inhibition of IL-6 receptor are associated with a lower risk of hospitalization for COVID-19, a phenotype that is associated with disease severity (eg, requiring supplemental oxygen is a typical reason for hospitalization).

Clinical Course And Risk Factors For In-hospital Death In Critical COVID-19 In Wuhan, China
F Li et al, MEDRXIV, September 28, 2020

The role of genomics in global cancer prevention
O Ginsburg et al, Nature Rev Clin Oncology, September 2020

In this Review, we present the relevant history and emerging frontiers of cancer genetics and genomics from the perspective of global cancer prevention. We highlight the importance of local context in the adoption of new technologies and emergent evidence, with illustrative examples from worldwide.

Impact of newborn screening and quality of therapy on the neurological outcome in glutaric aciduria type 1: a meta-analysis
N Boy et al, Genetics in Medicine, September 28, 2020

This meta-analysis demonstrates that NBS programs for Glutaric Aciduria Type 1 (GA1) have an overall positive effect on the neurological outcome of affected individuals but their success critically depends on the quality of therapy.

Development and Validation of a Serum Metabolomic Signature for Endometrial Cancer Screening in Postmenopausal Women
J Troisi et al, JAMA Network Open, September 28, 2020

Is combining the blood metabolomic signature of endometrial carcinoma with an ensemble machine learning algorithm a useful system for screening test for endometrial cancer? In this study of 1550 postmenopausal women, the proposed screening test correctly identified all 16 women with endometrial cancer, with 2 false-positive results and 0 false-negative results.

Global maps of travel time to healthcare facilities
DJ Weiss et al, Nature Medicine, September 28, 2020

Leveraging the geographically variable strengths of our facility datasets, we characterize travel time to healthcare facilities in unprecedented detail. We produce maps of travel time with and without access to motorized transport, thus characterizing travel time to healthcare for populations distributed across the wealth spectrum.
