Seek COVER: Development and validation of a personalized risk calculator for COVID-19 outcomes in an international network
RD Williams et al, MERXIV, July 27, 2020

We developed and validated COVID-19 Estimated Risk (COVER) scores that quantify a patient's risk of hospital admission (COVER-H), requiring intensive services (COVER-I), or fatality (COVER-F) in the 30-days following COVID-19 diagnosis. We analyzed a federated network of electronic medical records and claims data from 14 data sources and 6 countries.

Phase 3 clinical trial of investigational vaccine for COVID-19 begins
NIH News, July 27, 2020 Brand

A Phase 3 clinical trial designed to evaluate if an investigational vaccine can prevent symptomatic coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in adults has begun. The vaccine, known as mRNA-1273, was co-developed by the Cambridge, Massachusetts-based biotechnology company Moderna, Inc., and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID).

A genomics approach to male infertility
N Alhathal et al, Genetics in Medicine, July 28, 2020

Patients with severe oligospermia and nonobstructive azoospermia were investigated using exome sequencing (ES) in parallel with the standard practice of chromosomal analysis. In 285 patients, 10.5% (n?=?30) had evidence of chromosomal aberrations while nearly a quarter (n?=?69; 24.2%) had a potential monogenic form of male infertility.

Genome-wide detection of tandem DNA repeats that are expanded in autism
B Trost et al, Nature, July 27, 2020

Rare tandem repeat expansions had a prevalence of 23.3% in autism-affected children versus 20.7% in unaffected children, suggesting a collective contribution to autism risk of 2.6%. They included novel autism-linked tandem repeat expansions in DMPK and FXN, known for neuromuscular conditions, and in novel loci such as FGF14 and CACNB1.
