Observed face mask use outside retail chain stores during the COVID-19 pandemic in two cities in the state of Idaho, USA
Cahill ME , Lozoya SB , Griffin MA , Blackstock A , Stockdale K , Cowman S , Graff R , Spear C , Carter K . J Community Health 2023 During the COVID-19 pandemic, public health authorities have encouraged the use of face masks to minimize transmission within the community. To assess mask wear during a COVID-19 surge and guide public health response efforts, including public messaging on mask recommendations, we compared observed mask use in the largest city in each of Idaho's 2 most populous counties, both without a current mask mandate. We recorded mask usage by every third person exiting stores of 5 retail chains in Boise and Nampa during November 8-December 5, 2021. Observations were conducted during three time periods (morning, afternoon, and evening) on weekday and weekend days. A multivariable model with city, retail chain, and city-chain interaction was used to assess mask wear differences by city for each chain. Of 3021 observed persons, 22.0% wore masks. In Boise, 31.3% (430/1376) of observed persons wore masks; in Nampa, 14.3% (236/1645) wore masks. Among all persons wearing masks, > 94% wore masks correctly; cloth and surgical masks were most common. By retail chain, observed individuals at Boise locations were 2.3-5.7 times as likely to wear masks than persons at respective Nampa locations. This study provided a rapid, nonconfrontational assessment of public use of mitigation measures in 2 Idaho cities during a COVID-19 surge. |
Estimating the catchment population and incidence of severe acute respiratory infections in a district hospital in Bousse, Burkina Faso
Milucky JL , Compaore T , Obulbiga F , Cowman G , Whitney CG , Bicaba B . J Glob Health 2020 10 (1) 010422 Background: The primary cause of death in Burkina Faso is lower respiratory tract infections, accounting for 1 in 7 deaths. The Ministry of Health is building surveillance for severe acute respiratory infections (SARI) in four districts. This study sought to determine the catchment area of the Bousse district hospital and to describe disease burden of individuals hospitalized for SARI. Methods: Data were collected from hospital log books to identify individuals with a SARI diagnosis during 2015 and 2016. Residence of SARI patients was recorded to determine the catchment area of the hospital. Population data were used to estimate SARI incidence rates. Results: Investigators reviewed logs for 3034 hospital admissions; 885 SARI cases were identified. Five communes were identified as the hospital catchment area, with 770 SARI patients residing in these communes. The SARI incidence rate (IR) for all ages was 136 (95% confidence interval (CI) = 115, 161) and 266 (95% CI = 236, 300) cases per 100 000 population for 2015 and 2016, respectively. Children <1 (RI = 1111 cases per 100 000, 95% CI = 1047, 1178, and RI = 2425 cases per 100 000, 95% CI = 2330, 2524) and adults >/=65 years old (RI = 377 cases per 100 000, 95% CI = 341, 417, and RI = 816 cases per 100 000, 95% CI = 762, 874) had the highest burden of disease for 2015 and 2016, respectively. Conclusion: Our analysis found high rates of SARI, especially among children <1 year of age, and marked variation in incidence between the years studied. These baseline data and the method developed will be useful for the new SARI surveillance system. |
Faces of resistance: Using real-world patients and their advocates to teach medical students about antimicrobial stewardship
Nori P , Cowman K , Jezek A , Nosanchuk JD , Slosar-Cheah M , Sarwar U , Bartash R , Ostrowsky B . Open Forum Infect Dis 2019 6 (12) ofz487 We engaged medical students with antimicrobial stewardship (AS) and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) through patient stories and a panel on AMR advocacy with experts from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Infectious Diseases Society of America. Students were surveyed on their perceptions about AS and AMR (response rate = 139 of 166, 84%). |
